The ‘Beast from the East’ cold weather front is set to hit the UK this week, bringing with it more snow and temperatures predicted to remain below freezing most days.
With this in mind, we have put together a few tips and things to be aware of to help keep your house warm and cosy over the next few days!
- Check for freezing pipes
Freezing temperatures can make pipes expand (if the fluid in them freezes) and potentially cause them to leak. Try to maintain a constant temperature in your house to ensure this doesn’t happen. It is also worth checking your home insurance documents. Many insurance companies specify a minimum temperature for your property (often around 15 degrees) and may not pay out if your house is below this temperature.
- Keep the house at a consistent temperature
During severe weather patterns your house can lose its temperature quickly. Leave your heating on ‘constant’. By not letting your house cool down you reduce the amount of energy required to bring it back up to full temperature, think of a graph, you want your temperature ‘graph’ to be a smooth as possible. ‘Peaks and troughs = highs and lows of temperature’ this in turn can be translated to cost.
- Wrap Up!
If you set your thermostat at 25 degrees and you are in shorts and a t-shirt is that temperature necessary? By popping an extra layer on and turning your thermostat down a few degrees, you can make savings on your fuel costs. This will also reduce the load on your boiler, lessening the chance of breakdowns due to the appliances overworking….. A win, win!!
- Check on the elderly or vulnerable
Don’t forget to check on family, friends and neighbours that might also be feeling the cold. Check their heating is working and that they have everything they need!
